Week 12: Greek Week

Kalí Órexi

Greek Week is finally here!

All week we have been exploring our local Greek tavernas and enjoying mouth-watering moussaka, tzatziki, calamari and more!

Read on to discover our favourite tavernas in the Tri-Cities, and make sure to #SavourTheSummer before it’s too late.

Boukia Kai Syghorio

As they say in Greece, “one bite and all is forgotten.”

I know that when I am stressed or overwhelmed, one bite of Soutzoukakia and I am immediately transported back to the Saronic Gulf and the serene views of the Aegean Sea.

True, authentic Greek cuisine can bring the flavours of the Mediterranean right to the Tri-Cities. Thankfully, you don’t need an oracle to help you find the best places in town!

Check out our list below of our favourite spots to sit back and enjoy traditional (and modern!) Greek food.

Dinakis Mediterranean Grill

Dinakis was already mentioned in our Happy Hour post because they have one of the best Happy Hours in town ($3.99 drinks!). But, we would be remise if we didn’t highlight them for their deliciously authentic Mediterranean food as well. Originally from Afghanistan, the owners of Dinakis are experts on true Mediterranean tastes and, from mouthwatering prawn souvlaki to flavourful moussaka, Dinakis has the dishes to curb all of your Mediterranean cravings.

My Greek Taverna

Do you want to feel like you are lounging in a restaurant in Santorini, but without the expensive plane ride? If so, this is the place for you! Step out of your car and into Greece by visiting My Greek Taverna on Brunette Hwy in Coquitlam. Their award-winning food and welcoming atmosphere will have your taste buds thanking you! While My Greek Taverna is currently closed for renovations, make sure to mark your calendars for August 30th. We know where will be heading for dinner, do you?

Pallas Athena Greek Kouzina

Open in Port Coquitlam since 2006, the Pallas Athena mother and daughter duo set out to provide a casually elegant atmosphere combined with high quality dishes at affordable prices - and we can safely say they have succeeded! A staple in PoCo for the past 16 years, Pallas Athena is a must-go for tasty, authentic Greek cuisine. We highly recommend that you grab a friend and enjoy one of their delicious Piateles Ya Thio (Platters for Two). Trust us, you won’t be disappointed!

Sparta Greek Taverna and Pizza

A Greek Taverna that makes high quality pizza? Yup, you read that correctly. Sparta Greek Taverna and Pizza boasts a uniquely Greek pizza menu! From their “Sparta Empire” to their “Popeye Mediterranean” and “The Greek” pizzas, get ready for your worlds to collide in the best way possible. Along with their untraditional pizza offerings, Sparta’s also offers traditional Greek dishes such as souvlaki, chicken athena, dolmades and spanakopita as well as Canadian favourites like BBQ ribs and sockeye filet. It’s a one-stop-shop of deliciousness!

XPress Donair House Coquitlam (Halal)

How can we talk about Greek food without mentioning donair - possibly the greatest Mediterranean street food to ever make its way over the oceans and to Canada. Donair (known in Greece as Gyros) originated in Turkey supposedly during the 19th century when locals began roasting meat on vertical rotisseries rather than horizontal ones. Called many different names around the world (döner kebab, donair, gyros, shawarma, al pastor), we can all agree that this style of street food is a favourite no matter what you call it!

Did we miss anywhere?
